Donald Macdonald, M.D.

Raised in Monmouth County

I was raised here in Monmouth County and am grateful to have settled here, close to the places and people I love most in my life. My parents believed in the best education for their children, and as such, after attending Forrestdale, I spent four wonderful years at Portsmouth Abbey, a theocentric school that molded my entire future.

Being an outdoorsman and having a love for New England, I next chose Williams College, where I was graduated with Highest Honors in Chemistry. My enchantment with New England then led me to Dartmouth Medical School.

Oculoplastic Eye Surgery

After many years away I felt it was time to return to the NY metropolitan area and I chose to do my residency in ophthalmology at Cornell and the Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital.  During my residency, I was captivated with plastic and reconstructive surgery and decided to specialize in these areas.  I completed Fellowships in Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery from both the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital.

After two more graduations, I finally returned home to join a talented and bright ophthalmologist, Dr. William Caldwell. Over the years I have been fortunate to have worked with other fine eye doctors, such as the late Dr. Michael Lichtig, who we all miss, Dr. Tracey Lewis who is now practicing in Florida and Dr. Judith Simon, who is now Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in Ghana.

Shrewsbury Surgery Center

In 2000 I joined forces with Riverview Medical Center, now part of Meridian Health, to open the Shrewsbury Surgery Center. This facility is on Shrewsbury Avenue across from our office and is where we do most of our surgeries, including cataract, corneal transplants, DSEK, and cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

In the past ten years, it has become the envy of all surgery centers, known for its professionalism, state of the art equipment, and highly trained anesthesia and nursing departments

In 2000 I founded the Clearsight Laser Center in Tinton Falls.  This center is dedicated to refractive surgery, mainly LASIK and PRK, and CK utilizing the state of the art technology with the WaveLight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser technology.  This year I moved the Clearsight Laser Center to my office at 21 Gilbert Street North as an added convenience to our patients.

In addition to my extensive experience in Ophthalmology here in New Jersey, I have been fortunate to participate in over 20 trips to third-world countries, giving the gift of vision to the blind to many people in great need. These trips include missions to Ghana, Senegal, Rwanda, Tanzania, Cameroon and Nicaragua. We continue to support eye care in underserved areas through our non-profit, Right to Sight and Health.
